The course was designed and built by British F.W. Hawtree in 1972, a legend in the history of golf course design. But here the tradition extends beyond the golf course, to the Clubhouse which is located in the Torre Tavernera, an imposing stately home built on the site of the ancient Montornes Castle in 1718. One of the Club's most memorable moments was the celebration of the Spanish Open in October 1985, sponsored by Benson & Hedges and which saw the victory of the great Severiano Ballesteros and the professional debut of José María Olazábal. The women's European circuit also played an important international tournament in 1989, the Woolmark Match Play, which was won by Marie-Laure de Lorenzi.
